You're right, you don't want him to feel deprived otherwise when he has the chance he will pig out on the wrong foods.

Does he have any sports or physical activities that he likes? If so try to encourage and support him with these. The activities will help him burn more calories during the day, so that he can lose some weight while not cutting back too much on his food.

When it is time for snacking, try to keep nice summer cooling frozen fruit pops and even frozen fruit chunks. Even if he doesn't care for fruit he might like them when they are frozen.

Make sure that he has many good choices for keeping hydrated. Although I am not a big fan of artificial sweeteners for children, Crystal Light does have many new flavors and varieties & one which I particularly like the one that had added fiber and added protein. If he sees the label and thinks that it may be a "diet" food he probably won't want it, so you may want to make it for him and offer as a snack. It really does taste excellent and the added fiber and protein does help you feel a bit fuller than just a can of soda.

Crystal Light is also good frozen in ice pop trays.

Summer is a great time to BBQ and if you have not tried BBQ'd veggies, it might be something that you may want to try. In addition to burgers or hot dogs have the veggies or you could even make kabobs with a small amount of meat. It will be very low in calories so he can have as much as he wants.

When ever possible use smaller plates. When you use a smaller plate you eye confuses your stomach and thinks that it is getting more than it usually does. This works great in the summer if, you use paper plates. Just buy 1 size smaller. You'll save money, get more plates per package and he'll really not notice the difference.

Do you have a garden? if so it's a great way to add raw veggies into the diet. There are many veggies that people don't like cooked but love raw. If you don't have a garden buy a small quantity of raw veggies at your grocery store and let him try some.

With strawberries and bananas very plentiful and inexpensive right now you can melt some chocolate chips and dip the berries and bananas into the chocolate. This will give him the feeling that he is eating candy, yet the small amount of chocolate won't blow a diet. The added fiber from the fruit will help it to be filling.

Activity, more than diet can help with weight loss efforts. So try the activity side more than the diet side and you may find better results.

If he is a video game freak - try Wii Fit ofr the Wii system if you have one. Good exercise and a lot of fun.

Good luck!
