The Obesity Gene Link

Although this is just a first step of many, acknowledging that there is a connection between our genes and the chance to be overweight is a huge one.
Many scientists knew that there was a connection but could not isolate the specific genes involved. Now that they have been isolated more studies will be funded.

Having a gene connection does not mean that some are doomed to be obese - it just means that some have more of a tendency to be obese.
It shouldn’t be used as a crutch or excuse to be fat.

Six new gene mutations linked to obesity

WASHINGTON (Reuters) –
At least six new gene mutations linked to obesity that point to ways the brain and nervous system control eating and metabolism have been identified, researchers reported Sunday.

Joel Hirschhorn at Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston led a team called Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits, or GIANT, to screen 15 different studies of the entire human genetic map and pinpoint the six new genetic variations.

The GIANT team found variations in six genes — TMEM18, KCTD15, GNPDA2, SH2B1, MTCH2 and NEGR1 — were strongly associated with the height-to-weight ratio known as body mass index (BMI).

Christmas Drinks That Will Expand Your Waistline

Christmas is not just about cookies and cakes but also those drinks which flow in abundance at Christmas parties. Truth to be told, drinks are an integral part of any holiday, and not just Christmas. Be it New Year, Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving, etc., a party without drinks is considered a failure!

There are some drinks which have been traditionally associated with a particular holiday or season, one example of which is eggnog! Eggnog is an integral part of the Christmas season.

This is all good but the twist in the tale is that if you drink too much, you may gain weight! Sounds surprising? Read on to find out what I mean!

As a matter of fact, people believe that if they simply avoid the high calorie Christmas foods, such as cakes, chocolates, cookies, candies, etc., they won’t gain weight. As such, many ‘health conscious’ people tend to avoid these foods at Christmas parties; heck, some even look at the poor Christmas turkey with an eye of suspicion! However, this is just a partial truth. Even if you monitor your food intake, you could still gain weight during Christmas!

As a matter of fact, while people regulate their food intake, they fail to exercise self-control when it comes to drinks. People believe that all those darn calories are only in solid foods, and that drinks are ‘okay’. This is a big misconception. Drinks contain no less calories than foods; in fact I would say that some drinks have more calories than even the fattiest food out there! Add to that the fact that people usually have more than one of these calorie-rich drinks!

Now who can blame the poor tummy if it bulges out after all these?

Let’s focus on the famous eggnog first.
Alcoholic eggnog consists of almost 394 calories, while its nonalcoholic counterpart contains no less than 343 calories! Next comes the Irish Cream Liqueur, which is another popular drink among holidaymakers. If you drink just four ounces of Irish Cream Liqueur, you have consumed a whooping 400 calories! Whole milk, when mixed with hot cocoa, has a staggering 190 calories!

Now think about it: if you would drink these high caloric drinks in huge quantities, how could you keep your weight in check?
Be it foods or drinks, it is important to know about healthier substitutes of either one.

Fortunately, there are a lot of low-calorie drinks that you could ask for so as to keep your belly from bulging out! One example, of such a drink is the non alcoholic wine. You won’t believe that it contains less than 10 calories! And don’t forget about Champagne punch either; with just 74 calories per four ounces, this is yet another great holiday drink you could have this Christmas!

So the next time you hit a Christmas party, be sure to keep your drinks in check; remember that they could prove to be as bad for your health as foods!

1 Important Tip To Avoid Weight Gain During the Holidays

The holiday season offers us wonderful party food, homemade goodies and an abundance of junk food. Most of us end up gaining weight during the holidays, and then they have to spend the entire New Year struggling to lose those extra pounds.

If you are someone who wants to remain fit and healthy during and after the holidays, this article is for you.

Believe it or not, by following certain simple steps, it is possible to ensure that you don’t put on extra pounds like others during the holiday season.

One of the most important tips that you can remember this holiday season is to avoid alcohol altogether or at least reduce its intake by a drastic level.

Do you know that if you consume just one ounce of alcohol, you have consumed about 64 useless calories? The calories that your body receives from alcohol have no real, nutritional value; if anything, they make you fatter.

You must remember that it’s not just the calories from alcohol that is the problem, but when you drink even just 1 drink your resistance is lowered and your more apt to eat a lot more.

To ensure that we mix well within our social circle of friends, some of us tend to drink alcohol during the holiday season even if we don’t drink otherwise. Drinking loads of alcohol might make your friends happy, but you will feel sorry when you acquire a huge potbelly as a result of that!

For the regular party hoppers, holidays give them just another reason to step up to the bar. Be it at get-togethers, Christmas parties, Christmas dinner, not to forget the New Year party, drinks flow in plenty, and people don’t seem to exercise any self-control, whatsoever.
However if you want, you CAN enjoy the holidays without all that alcohol.

When at a party, you can ask for low-calorie drinks, or even better, non-alcoholic drinks. Some may shy away from only drinking water, though if you are very health-conscious, that is probably all that you should drink at Christmas parties.

When it comes to drinking wine, you can mix your drink with low-calorie or sugar-free varieties of soft drinks so as to reduce your total calorie intake. These drinks are often called spritzers, since there is just a spritz of wine.

If you are drinking, have every other drink, just have calorie free soda or pure water. This will stretch the amount of time that you have a glass in your hand and will also make you less tempted to snack on everything in sight. Having a glass of sugar free soda looks just like it alcoholic counterpart and no one but you and the host or hostess will know.

When you do have an alcoholic drink be sure to have plenty of ice and soda in your glass before adding alcohol. Don’t add the alcohol first as you will probably make the drink too strong.

If you are a party where you can mix your own drinks - that’s better yet.

As the party goes on many get use to the taste of their drinks and have a tendency to make them stronger. This is not only a bad thing if you are driving (as you should never, ever drink and drive) but you will also pack on more calories. So be sure to measure the alcohol and if anything make your drinks weaker as the night goes on.

You can also cut down on your food intake (without of course skipping breakfast, lunch or dinner) to make sure that you don’t consume more than your total daily calorie limit; if you can do that, then that would further ensure that you remain fit throughout the Christmas season.

Last but not the last, exercising self-control is important. No matter what your friends tell you, you know what you should drink and how much, right? Drink moderately, and everything else will fall in place!

Can You Speak To Your Subconscious and Lose Weight?

Many people swear to this method but in order for it to work you must actually believe that it will. You may not believe it in the beginning and you may feel silly but after a few tries it gets easier and you may find that you actually like it.

Some of the most brilliant and successful people I know find that they get their best results by speaking aloud to their subconscious!
Certainly, you must do this when you are in a room alone, or people will think you’ve lost your mind. But try it! It’s free! And it may help you. It has helped a lot of people.

The first thing in the morning, after you’re up and around and have weighed yourself and written for five minutes in your note book—if you’re making that psychological test of your own ideas, your own subconscious, actually—stand up very straight, your hands at your side. And say aloud:

”I am not fat! I am thin! I have allowed fat to accumulate on my body, but it does not belong there. I am a thin, well-formed human being, and I shall do all in my power to stay that way—to regain the appearance that I know is mine.”

Say that several times. After the first day, omit the first sentence—and after that never again use the word “not” to your subconscious.

Never plant a negative thought in your subconscious mind! A negative thought is bad for the subconscious, no matter what the thought may be. Never give the subconscious any ideas about failure, unhappiness or ugliness. Only by thinking success can you become successful. Only by giving to the subconscious mind ideas of what you want to be can you become that way.

That may sound oversimplified to you and in a way it is. For certainly these thoughts on success must be followed by actions to make you successful. But the thoughts must come first, or the actions cannot follow.

Over 30 years ago, Emile Coué of Nantes, France, had what was, at that time, a novel idea. He suggested that you put thirty knots in a piece of string. And that, twice a day, at morning and at night, you take the string and repeat thirty times, once each time you fingered one of the knots, “Every day in every way I’m getting better and better.”

The idea worked beautifully for some people—and not at all for others. So Coué and his theory faded out of sight. Why? Well, for one reason, he had nothing to sell, so there wasn’t any promotional work back of him.

If he’d had something to sell, and had been given a big advertising build-up, his theory might still be around. For another reason, he offered no follow-up ideas. Now, saying “Every day in every way I’m getting better and better,” is planting a very fine idea in the subconscious. But unless you go on from there, the idea fades into nothingness.

If everyone said that simple sentence every day—and then followed up the remark by trying, conscientiously, actually to be better and better every day, M. Coué’s idea might have continued its initial spectacular success. Today, after these thirty years, we might be a different and a better people!

So remember to say your phrase every day. You can even change it a bit after a week or two but always try to fit in - I am thin.

Good Luck!

Thanksgiving Day Poem For Dieters

May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have never a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!

Don’t Worry Too Much About Holiday Weight Gain

The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a wonderful season, if not for all the mirth and hope that it brings to us, but for the great, calorie-rich foods and drinks that we get to eat at Holiday parties!

Who really cares what happens after that? We just need to satiate our junk food cravings NOW, and pay the price of our indulgence later!
And what would be the price of indulgence? A fat tummy, two flabby arms, those awful-looking love handles, and of course, thunder thighs!

Now, if you are happy with holiday weight gain, then read no further. This article is only for those who don’t think twice while eating all the junk foods they could lay their hands on, and later scream when their old clothes no longer fit in or the scale shows an increase of 10-15 pounds. All these means that the person has gained a lot of weight and now is the time to start a weight loss plan, which, hopefully, would have a happy ending!

Now, you have got two no so easy choices. Either be happy and contented with your new look and shape (after all, your body’s chemistry didn’t change at all; all that happened is that you got a bit bulkier in shape) and buy new, huge clothes that would fit nicely into your new body; or start losing weight.

There is really no reason to be stressed out and sad about weight gain because you are not the only one who has gained weight this Christmas! You will notice that many of your peers have the same potbellies as you; so take heart in that!

Now, there are some easy ways to lose weight without taking the help of fad diets or diet pills. Let’s say that you have spent a lot of money this Christmas. If you are like me, you would end up with a huge credit card debt as soon as the festive season is over!

Naturally, you will have to cut corners in order to repay your debt. This means that you would be eating less food than before (which is what ‘dieting’ is all about), won’t be able to afford the expensive cakes, chocolates and burgers.

Now, if you are more fortunate than me, you won’t have a huge credit card bill to pay off. In that case, of course you will have to go down the route of diet and exercise to ensure that you shed all the extra flab!

I am not going to worry about Easter chocolates since usually I don’t have enough money to spend on them (thanks to the big money I spent during Christmas); so there is no more reason for me to put on any extra weight during Easter!
I wish you the best in your weight loss goals!
