Exercise-heart study casts doubt on ‘fit but fat’ theory


CHICAGO - New research challenges the notion that you can be fat and fit, finding that being active can lower but not eliminate heart risks faced by heavy women. “It doesn’t take away the risk entirely. Weight still matters,” said Dr. Martha Gulati, a heart specialist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Previous research has gone back and forth on whether exercise or weight has a greater influence on heart disease risks.

4 Easy Tips For Healthier Weight Loss

The healthier your weight loss, the longer you will keep the weight off and the better you will feel.
Here are 4 tips that will help you get started on your weight loss journey.

1. Use your common sense:
Many times people don’t use their common sense at all when making certain important choices of their lives, and that surprises me to no end. Always use your common sense, be it when you are out eating fatty foods or cooking meals at home. Think about each of your activity and how it will affect your body weight. Think whether your activities are taking you nearer to your weight loss goal or further from it? Think whether your activities are helping you lose weight or gain it even further!

2. Find healthy alternatives to your favorite foods:
One of the reasons why fad diets fail is that they don’t provide enough nutrition to your body. You should first think about proving nutrition to your body and then about dieting. For instance, suppose that you are not overweight and you don’t need to diet; even then, should you be eating all those junk and processed foods? No at all, because they add nothing to your body’s nutrition level.

On the other hand, they harm your body all the more, or make you gain weight. You should replace unhealthy foods with their healthy substitutes. As an example, you should always drink water instead of soda or fizzy drinks. While soda or fizzy drinks will make you fatter, water will help you lose weight by burning your calories.

3. Don’t skip your exercises:
No matter what your body weight is, you should never want to skip your exercises. It is one thing to skip exercise for one day during the week; it is totally a different thing to avoid exercises altogether. Remember that if you rely only on diet, you can never expect to lose weight fast. Exercises are the best ways to lose weight quickly but healthily!

4. Join weight loss support groups or diet and exercise with a partner.
From time to time, when you are following your weight loss program, you will feel dejected and frustrated and would want to give it up all.
This is the time when you need someone to lift up your spirits. Who can support you better than your peers? You can join weight loss forums online for free. These forums consist of two types of members: people who are struggling to lose weight just like you, and people who have successfully made it to the slim figure.

These people understand all your needs and requirements. They understand that you would like to have a bowl of chocolate soup instead of that damn old carrot. They understand that you would like to have soft drinks instead of plain water.

Don’t Stress If You Break Your Diet

I see so many people get overly stressed out if they break their diet due to either giving in to a craving indulging at a special occasion. They often get so stressed, that they give up and just blow their diet completely.

Were all human and there will be slip ups along the way - just accept that fact, then move on and get back on track.

This weekend, I’m having a friend from Hawaii fly in for a few days and I can either stay with my diet and not truly enjoy our time together while we dine out or I can just say the heck with it and splurge for a few days, then once they leave get back to where I should be.

So it sets me back a few days - who cares. I’m planning on enjoying myself and the time we have together and not worry where we have to eat.

I’ve learned that friends are more important than worrying about gaining a pound or two.

Starting Your Diet

There is no better time than now to start your diet. You still have several weeks before swim suit season so you don’t have to try to crash diet.

You also have the advantage of finding that many fruits and veggies are now at low prices due to the warmer weather. For example: 2 weeks ago strawberries were $3.29 for a small pack and today I see they they are $1.25.

I also checked in the store and most berries had gone down in price along with salad greens and most veggies. Since a healthy diet includes tons of fruits and veggies and cost is often an issue now is the time to take advantage of the lower prices. Yes, they still may be more expensive than a bag of chips, but if you choose produce that is on sale you’ll see that you can get it for less than junk food.

Start planning your diet now so that you don’t have to rush it in a few weeks.

So How Much Water Do We Need To Drink

Lately there has been a buzz talking about how much water we really need to drink. Some now say that we don’t need glass after glass but only need to drink when we are thirsty.

They say that the water doesn’t help to hydrate the skin, get rid of toxins, help with weight loss or even help to avoid headaches.

I say bunk!

Have you ever been on vacation or away a few days and haven’t had enough water? You don’t feel as energetic and your skin surely shows a dryness. Also scan through any of the blogs by super models and see what their top skin care tip is —it’s always drinking lots of water. Now you may thing that researchers know more than a super model, but you must also realize that a super model relies on having exceptional skin –and she would notice a difference right away.

Also look at paparazzi photos of those who rely on beautiful skin -they are always seen with a water bottle. These are people who lose work if their skin is not at their best and if they are not feeling their best.

Although I don’t believe that the 8 glass theory is correct, I do believe that you should be drinking half you weight in ounces each day. For example: if you weight 150 pounds you should drink around 75 ounces a day. 120 pounds - 60 ounces. And if you live in a dry climate or sweat a lot from physical exertion you should drink more.

Just take a look at those around you. Who looks and act healthy and who doesn’t, then find out how much water they drink and you’ll see that those who are healthy drink more.
