NEW YORK — Having a big belly in your 40s can boost your risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia decades later, a new study suggests.

It’s not just about your weight. While previous research has found evidence that obesity in middle age raises the chances of developing dementia later, the new work found a separate risk from storing a lot of fat in the abdomen. Even people who weren’t overweight were susceptible.

_ Overweight people were 82 percent more likely if they had a low belly measurement, but more than twice as likely if they had a high belly measurement.

_ Obese people were 81 percent more likely if they had a low belly measurement, but more than three times as likely if they had a high measurement.

Weight Loss Pills and Diets - Do They Work

Every year we see new diet pills and new diets, we try each new pill and fad diet, yet most of us continue to stay heavy. Is it us or is the truth the fact that these don’t allow long term weight loss?

Pretend that the diet pill or the weight loss supplement promoted by the top weight loss companies indeed does work. Now answer me this question: if they indeed work and if everyone is using them how come 90% of the users usually gain back all the weight they had lost within a few months of using these pills and supplements?

Why don’t these pills and supplements have a positive and permanent effect on the dieter’s body weight? Well, truth is and always will be bitter, but the fact remains that these weight loss companies are more interested in our money than weight.

Just think about it for a while: if you were to really lose weight and become fit using their solutions, why would they be still in the business? If everyone becomes trim and slim, why would anyone buy their solutions?

Before purchasing the latest diet pill or start a fad diet, look at those around you that are slim. What do they eat? How much exercise do they do? Do they always seem to be moving around while you are happy just to sit on the couch?

The truth is, in order to lose weight long term you must make real changes to your diet - changes that you can live with. Plus you will need to keep your body moving. If you don’t have time to go to the gym, exercise at home. If you can, get a treadmill or elliptical trainer and use it daily.

Just squeezing in 15 minutes a day of exercise will give you almost 2 hours of exercise a week. Surely you can fit in 15 minutes a day? Can’t fit it in all at one time? Do 5 minutes at a time and try to hit 20 minutes a day. Although 5 minutes at a time won’t give you the cardio benefits, you will boost your metabolism and burn calories.

If you can burn just 100 calories extra a day you will lose 10 pounds by the end of the year!

Yes, say nuts to your diet and find that you lose the weight and keep the weight off without the usual hunger.

Ok, nuts can be high in calories and fat but it’s the fat and protein in the nuts (and seeds) that help you from gorging on cakes and high calorie cookies that are high in sugar, fat and calories with no nutritional benefits to speak of.

Choose nuts and seeds that are raw and preferably not salted. Flaxseeds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pistachios, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds work well. You can eat the seeds and nuts on their own or sprinkle them in salads or yogurt.

Just try to keep the amount of seed or nuts down to a minimum (1 tablespoon worth or about 10 nuts depending on their size). I know that this does not sound like enough to even taste, but nuts are flavorful and you’ll will be surprised how far that amount goes.

Try it, it just might take the edge off of your cravings.

Read Nutrition Labels So That You Stay On Your Diet

Over the last few days there has been many news articles talking about high fructose corn syrup making the world a bit fatter every year.

If you have been purchasing products that are labeled “diet”, “low calorie” or “low fat” you have probably assumed that your product doesn’t contain high fructose corn syrup. Well you had better check again!

Yesterday I decided to take a long and good look in the grocery store, reading as many labels as I could without getting totally pissed off. What I found was that a very high percentage of products that are labeled as diet, low calorie and low fat have high fructose corn syrup as the first ingredient!!

I did find however, that there were similar products that didn’t contain this ingredient.

Since there is so much research that shows that this ingredient is so bad for our bodies it’s worth the time reading each product label before you purchase it.

Don’t just assume because it’s a diet product, your safe–take the time to read. If you have been dieting but have not been able to shake that extra weight-it just might be that you have been eating products with high fructose corn syrup.
