Most of us gain weight over the winter as we don’t notice many of the extra bulges that we have gained eating heavier foods and hunkering down in front of the TV on cold, snowy nights.

Start by think of what you want to achieve in the way of body shape and also what areas of your body you want to work on. Also start looking for summer recipes and lighter meals that use the fruits and veggies that will soon be in season.

Then think about your diet. Do you want to go on a specific diet like NutriSystem or do you want to try to make your own by eating healthier and making better food choices.

Take a few weeks to get your plan ready and when the time comes, you’ll be able to start right away.

Weight training aids chronic neck pain

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) -
New research suggests that
strength training may ease chronic neck and shoulder pain, a
problem that has grown increasingly common as people spend more
time on computers.

For 10 weeks, women in the strength-training group worked
out their neck and shoulder muscles using hand weights, three
times per week for 20 minutes. Women in the aerobic-exercise
groups worked out on a stationary bike.

After 10 weeks, women who strength-trained showed a 70
percent to 80 percent decrease in their pain ratings from the
beginning of the study. In contrast, those who got aerobic
exercise often felt better in the couple hours afterward, but
there was no long-term pain improvement.

The findings are published in the journal Arthritis &
Rheumatism.

Don’t be too strict when dieting

Diets can be great, they can also be frustrating and can cause you to gain weight.

How can diets cause to to gain weight you ask?

When many people start out on a diet, they are very strict with themselves. They often skip meals to save on calories. They will also get to the point where they are incredibly hungry and cranky.

This then causes you to binge and once you start to continue to eat and eat and you will often find that you have not only gained back the weight that you have lost–but more.

Instead - when you go on a diet be sure to eat what is allowed. So if you diet states that you can have 6 small meals and 2 healthy snacks, don’t miss a meal and be sure to eat your snacks.

This way you never get too hungry or feel deprived. If you find that you are not always hungry and craving your diet will be easier to live with and you will be able to lose the weight that you want without feeling deprived.

Weight Loss Surgery, What Are Your Options?

Did you get a chance to watch Oprah yesterday? It was all about weight loss surgeries and what the different options are.

Here is a short version of your weight loss surgery options

Are you looking to lose weight? If you are, you likely already know that you have a number of different options. For instance, you can go about losing weight naturally, with the use of exercise and healthy eating. You can also lose weight with the assistance of weight loss products, like diet pills. Another option that you have is weight loss surgery. Although all of the previous weight loss methods are popular, weight loss surgery is rapidly increasing in popularity.

If you are interested in undergoing weight loss surgery, you are not alone. As previously mentioned, weight loss surgery is increasing in popularity, especially among teens.

If you have never considered weight loss surgery before, you may be wondering what all of your options are.

While there are a number of different weight loss surgical procedures that you can undergo, you will find that there are two main procedures. These procedures, which include gastric bypass surgery and lap-band surgery, are outlined below.

Gastric bypass surgery is a weight loss surgery that involves the stapling of the stomach. That is why this procedure is also commonly referred to as stomach stapling. When undergoing gastric bypass surgery, your surgeon will portion off some of your stomach, making a smaller pouch. Your intestine will then be rerouted, making it so that your food consumption only impacts a portion of your stomach. This is what makes it possible for you lose weight with gastric bypass surgery.

After bypass surgery the food you eat at each meal (which is only equal to around 6 grapes) will almost immediately hit your intestines so you feel full quickly. Many who undergo bypass surgery also find themselves having gas throughout the day.

Although gastric bypass surgery is a common weight loss surgery to undergo, it isn’t right for everyone. Most physicians require their patients to be around eighty pounds or more overweight. In some rare instances, those who are less than eighty pounds overweight are able to undergo gastric bypass surgery if their health is at risk or if they have other medical problems, such as diabetes.

As previously stated, lap-band surgery is another weight loss surgery that is increasing in popularity. Lap-band surgery is similar to gastric bypass surgery. When undergoing lap-band surgery, your stomach pouch is made smaller. One of the few differences is that your stomach is not stapled, but an adjustable band is used. That is one of the reasons why lap-band surgery is so popular, as the band used can be completely removed or easily adjusted (but remember any adjustments can only happen during surgery, so you may be looking at a few different surgeries)

Lap-band surgery and gastric bypass surgery are not the only weight loss surgeries available to you, but they are two of the most popular. Thousands of Americans have undergone these two weight loss surgeries. For many individuals, weight loss surgery is a last resort. Many who undergo weight loss surgery have not had success with losing weight any other way. If you are interested in undergoing a weight loss surgical procedure, you will want to speak with your physician.

One of the many reasons why it is important to speak with your doctor or another health care professional is because weight loss surgery isn’t right for everyone. In addition to being at the “right,” weight, you also need to have the will power to reduce your food consumption. If you eat too much food, namely too much food for your stomach to hold, you can not only harm your weight loss progress, but you can also put your health at risk.

With both the gastric bypass and lap-band the patient can learn to over eat and stretch the stomach. When this occurs, your weight can again balloon up and you may find yourself again obese.

You must also realize that these surgeries are not an easy fix. You will need time to recuperate and should also see a therapist, as many surgery patients will transfer their food addictions to another addiction such as alcohol or drugs. A therapist will work you through this and will also help teach you how to accept your new body.

Always remember that surgery should be your last resort and should not be taken lightly. It is after all surgery.

The Health Benefits of Chocolate

Lately chocolate has been in the news and if you like chocolate as much as I do, you’ll want to pay attention to the information below.

According to Swiss scientists, having dark, bittersweet chocolate may be good for your cardiovascular system. The research team came to this conclusion after testing on a group of 20 volunteers, which were smokers without health problems.

The subjects were asked not to eat any other types of foods rich in anti-oxidants such as apples, onion and cabbage and after that they were given 40 grams of different types of chocolate.

Two hours after consuming the chocolate, the echo-graph showed that dark chocolate, with a cocoa percent of at least 74%, significantly improved the blood flow.

However, white chocolate and milk chocolate did not achieve similar effects. The researches that performed the study say that dark chocolate contains the largest quantity of anti-oxidants for one gram than other products like red vine, green tea or berries.

You must remember that chocolate also contains fats and sugar so, it can cause weight problems if you eat too much.

If you plan on adding dark chocolate to your diet, just remember to add in the extra calories and try to do a bit more exercise to burn them off (which is also good for your heart.) If you gain weight, that can outweigh the benefits of chocolate.

When shopping for Valentines Day chocolate remember, to look for packages that contain dark chocolate, then you won’t feel guilty about eating a piece or two each day.
